The Black Dog and Me

We have a 1 in 4 chance of suffering from mental health issues throughout our life and yet there is still the stigma and confusion around it; am I mental? Am I sane? Do I need to be institutionalised?
There are many causes of depression and anxiety but there is no wrong or right way to treat it. Medication can really help, I see it as you are stuck in a hole in the ground and the medication gives you the materials of a ladder to get you out of there but you still have to do the work. That is when therapy can help, it can be difficult to find what works for you.
Yet, there is a lot of peer support out there. When I first experienced mental health issues there wasn’t much out there for me but I was to find that the internet was great at offering me this peer led support. This level of support allows you to be aware of others that are in a similar condition and develop better strategies of dealing with things.
You are more than your diagnosis and it does not define you as a person. It may influence how your version of the world looks and how others look at you but being honest and open about your experiences not only helps others it helps you grow as a person.
That’s why I am writing my memoirs and I hope to share my insights with you and help you realise you are not alone. I experienced bullying and other trauma during my teenage years that impacted me as a person and those experiences morphed my view of the world leading to some quite poor strategies that did not help. By writing my story it helped me heal and grow.
If you require any support do not hesitate to reach out for help. There is lots of support out there, reach out to someone you trust and tell them how you feel. If you are a concerned family member, don’t be afraid of asking how someone is; this can be a big relief, the person may not respond immediately but they will know that you are there for them.

Let us end on a thoughtful context this evening.

Everyone enjoys music, it has been scientifically that it affects every nerve in our body.
My favourite song if I’m feeling down (we all feel numb and down sometimes) is from a film “The Brooke Ellison Story” about a young girl who suffers paralysis and her experiences of growth.

It’s called “Its gonna be ok” and it helped me when I was losing my sight, I related to the lyrics and I get tingles even now.

That’s why working me is great, I’ll get you to explore yourself through pieces of music and that helps me guide your journey.

Opening your mind

When we go through challenges and setbacks it’s hard to see the bigger picture. That little voice on your shoulder telling you those horrible things can pull you further from your goals.

What I want you to do is write that mindchatter down – spend a few minutes doing this.  Don’t throw it away but take a deep breath then find one that stands out and put it as an affirmation.

An example may be; “I’m not good enough to perform”
The affirmation would be; ” I am a great musician and I will get that audition.”

Repeat the affirmation til you believe it. It will make a difference.
